While the price of many popular inkjet printers is falling to a level that bargain hunters find hard to resist, the same cannot be said of replacement ink cartridges that these devices devour at regular intervals. Price-wise vintage champagne can work out cheaper per millilitre than some brands of proprietary ink. The use of monitoring technology by printer manufacturers, to gauge ink availability, can also have a bearing on cost as warnings are given, sometimes prematurely, as to when a replacement is needed. As a result your inkjet printer can be a rather expensive accessory.

InkTec, a Korean company, believes it has a cost-effective solution to this problem. From its early beginnings as a research-orientated organisation focusing on the production of printers, InkTec has developed a range of ink refills targeted at Canon, Epson, Hewlett-Packard and Lexmark printers. An example from the HP range is the HPI-9078C kit which can be used with various models.

This particular kit is made up of three 20ml bottles of cyan, magenta and yellow ink plus a selection of tools to help carry out the refilling process. There is a gimlet for making holes, a refill clip, ink suction syringe, three injection needles, adhesive colour labels and a pair of plastic gloves. A User Manual provides step-by-step instructions with appropriate diagrams.

Basically you need to remove the cartridge from the printer before housing it in the refill clip and injecting the desired coloured ink into the appropriate section of the cartridge. Generally the process is trouble-free although some tissues might be required to soak up any minor spillage. A warning is given on the box about not drinking the liquid but presumably this has nothing to do with the champagne price comparison.

A kit contains enough ink for two complete refills and extra ink can be purchased to supplement the initial supply. While not everybody will be comfortable taking this DIY route, it does offer a substantial saving on cost while hopefully not causing too much of a mess.
